2018 Scottish Enterprise Awards

SME NEWS / 2018 Scottish Enterprise Awards 21 , S + C Engineering, previously Smillie & Cuthbertson Ltd, provides engineering solutions to customers in the food manufacturing industry and sectors such as defence, rail, energy, transport, manufacturing, etc as well as local authorities and health boards. Having recognised the firm in our prestigious Scottish Enterprise Awards for 2018 we felt it was important to showcase its vast service offering and commitment to flexibility and excellence. Best Metalwork Engineering Firm - Lowlands Established in 1947, Smillie & Cuthbertson Ltd rebranded as S + C Engineering in 2012 to celebrate their 65th year in business. This was the ideal opportunity to redefine the firm’s image with a fresh, modern logo and colourful branding which reflects the business as it is today: a highly skilled, multi-disciplined provider. Managing Director, Alasdair Mackenzie served his engineering apprenticeship with the company before leaving to gain experience in project management and returning to purchase the business with his wife Heather Mackenzie, now Finance Director, from the retiring owner in 2006. Now in its 71st year, S + C Engineering has diversified both in terms of staff and its approach to business, allowing the company to provide a wider spectrum of services to an even wider spectrum of sectors. The secret to the firm’s vast success is its highly skilled tradesmen, who are committed to delivering bespoke services such as fabrication, welding, machining and maintenance. It is the ability to offer a turnkey package from when they approach the firm with a problem, through to an effective engineered solution, which is the firm’s USP, and this would be impossible without this dedicated workforce of experienced staff. As such, S + C Engineering has invested heavily in accreditations, plant and equipment and staff training over the last five years. Thanks to this, the firm has been able to triple its staff and company turnover as well as offer a unique multi-skilled engineering service to its valued customers. Additionally, since inception the firm has always recognised and encouraged youth development and work closely with local schools and colleges to promote Engineering as a career. Therefore, S + C Engineering are delighted to have just secured three places for its junior management staff to study for a BA (Hons) Degree in Business Management at University of West of Scotland. This is a new initiative developed by lecturers at the Paisley Campus to work with Employers to deliver workplace learning to Employees who have shown commitment and dedication to their roles. S + C Engineering are extremely honoured that its staff have been chosen to take part in this new initiative which could see the academic approach to education completely changing over the coming years. With a focus on people, S + C Engineering also feel that it is important to give back to the local area, which led the firm to establish its own Community Fund in 2015. Each year, the company provides support to local charities and community groups who make a difference to people in Ayrshire. The firm’s Community Fund has also supported Scottish Athletes at the Paralympic and Commonwealth Games, with donations of specially manufactured Throwing Chairs for events such Discus and Club. The firm’s employees also recently took part in a Tough Mudder challenge to raise funds for a local Neurological Rehabilitation Unit. Looking to the future, S + C Engineering’s objectives are to continue establishing its reputation across many industries and geographical areas, whilst continuing to invest in its people and youth development to become a respected and attractive employer across Ayrshire. These goals will help the company to thrive over the coming years and enjoy even greater success.
