Managing Director of the Year Awards 2022

30 | Managing Director of the Year Awards 2022 Heritage and culture are a huge part of our everyday lives as well as our unseen roots. We are all part of something bigger than us as we connect via shared culture and by sharing and experiencing our culture with each other. As experienced National Lottery Heritage Fund and Arts Council consultants, Tricolor are an award-winning non-profit sector organisational and project development specialist consultancy that helps its diverse clients embrace change, successfully secure funding and develop. Tricolor’s work with councils, heritage trusts, museums, and volunteer-led organisations means that it can take a consistent, professional approach to every unique project. Here we learn about Tricolor as it wins this esteemed award. Tricolor was established with passion to ensure a high-quality service for all its clients. From national museums to local community groups, Tricolor recognises and recruits gifted, innovative, and enthusiastic interns, trainees, and consultants that will inevitably bring positive change to people and communities. Ultimately, Tricolor works alongside organisations that are driven towards making a difference – for the better. Tricolor collaborates with its clients to help them achieve their goals and social mission. This can be from consultation and audience research to visioning, business planning, organisational development, marketing, fundraising, and more. As a motivated and imaginative person, Managing Director Sarah Dowd leads Tricolor with a passionate yet focused attitude towards business planning and organisational development. A Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Marketing and a member of both the Wellcome Trust and National Lottery Heritage Fundappointed elite consultants register, Sarah has helped to raise over £130m for NPO clients. Her leadership style is very down to earth and compassionate. Sarah said, “I would never ask anyone to do anything I haven’t or wouldn’t do. I’m a great believer in giving people all the right tools for the job so we offer a comprehensive training programme to all our consultants.” By providing training, trust, and respect, Sarah builds relationships with employees as well as clients – by giving team members autonomy and the support they need, she has formed a tight-knit team of highly motivated individuals who are all eager to support and sustainably develop NPOs. Encouraging employees to connect remotely, Sarah tells us, “The pandemic has transformed NPO Consulting MD of the Year 2022: Sarah Dowd attitudes to how people work with remote working becoming increasingly common. By 2019 Tricolor had already embraced remote and virtual working as our team had grown to include consultants from around the UK, Europe and North America. As a result we were no strangers to Zoom etc when most people hadn’t heard of it so, when the pandemic hit, we could continue to function effectively.” This meant that Tricolor has blossomed even throughout uncertain times and has the ability to consistently impact the sector in a positive way while encouraging clients to branch out into an increasingly digital world. Tricolor was in great demand during the pandemic. Sarah tells us, “We’re passionate about museums, heritage and culture and their importance for people and communities and we wanted to help. We were determined to help ensure that these important elements of our culture were not wiped out by the pandemic. We supported local museums, castles, historic railways, cathedrals, volunteer groups and wildlife trusts amongst others – all very different organisations but all facing common threats. We worked with them all to help them to not just survive, but to aim to thrive.” It is with Sarah’s resourceful and inventive mindset that Tricolor has flourished since its birth. As Managing Director, Sarah “ensures that all team members know they are a valued part of the organisation, know what is expected of them, and are helped and encouraged to deliver work of the highest standard in a professional manner to our clients, whilst enjoying working together in a sociable and informal environment.” For the future, Sarah plans on driving the business further into success as it transforms businesses and plans on expanding its “current paid internship programme to specifically target and encourage candidates who have been excluded from the NPO sector due to lack of representation or academic experience. We are actively seeking people who want to change the system that the heritage we have been taught has produced.” she proudly shares. We wish Sarah and Tricolor the best as their sensational success aligns with its original and developing goals – long may its success continue.
