Thirty years later, and under the brand-new management of Directors Danny Jessep and Martin Coleman, SJ Scaffolding has grown to undertake local, regional and national projects of all sizes across Lincoln and the surrounding areas. SJ Scaffolding collaborates with major house builders and smaller contractors to deliver safe and personal service of an exceptional standard, every time. For thirty years, SJ Scaffolding (Lincoln) has been providing quality scaffolding throughout Lincoln and the surrounding areas delivered by experienced and qualified scaffolders, with the help of external safety consultants who guarantee high standards in every job. Having worked with major housebuilders in the area such as Persimmon Homes, Taylor Wimpey and more, as well as contractors and builders engaged in smaller projects such as renovations and extensions, SJ Scaffolding boasts comprehensive services and extensive industry expertise. In September 2019, the directors who had grown SJ Scaffolding from the ground up retired, handing over their enterprise to long-term scaffolders, Danny Jessep and Martin Coleman. Their first year has dropped the new directors right in at the deep end, owing to adversities like Covid-19 and Brexit, but the pair have taken to their new roles quickly, learning as much about the business as they can and gaining qualifications to strengthen the reputation of themselves and their brand. Danny and Martin’s main aim over this past year has been to keep up with the momentum of previous years, maintaining repeat business from customers by offering a competitive price for a service like no other that is led by health and safety. With over fifty years of shared experience in the scaffolding industry, the dynamic duo is keen to expand the business, implementing innovative methods and fresh new ideas into their work with their many clients. With the help of their Estimating Manager, Tony Beeston, who has thirty years in the industry and is qualified to alleviate some of the directors’ more tedious tasks and monitor profit margins, Danny and Martin are able to concentrate on growing their business and its clientele. Stern and professional when they need to be, but always fair, the directors look after their team of experienced scaffolders, prioritising health and safety with the help of an external local health and safety management team at Hunt & Sykes Safety Services Ltd. As a result, SJ Scaffolding’s conscientious care for the wellbeing of its staff has meant that members of its team rarely go elsewhere and have worked with the firm for more than five years. When the workload allows, SJ Scaffolding also employs two young apprentices each year to locally train as scaffolders and begin growing their own careers. The ongoing global pandemic has meant an unusual first year for Danny and Martin, but the pair have resiliently pushed through. At the beginning of the first lockdown, all staff kept working with four scaffolders working on projects that many small businesses or self-employed builders who could not afford to close were carrying out. In the latter months, SJ Scaffolding did have to furlough some staff, but four to six weeks later they were able to bring half of the workforce back to work on some of the bigger sites as they were reopened. Whilst two members of staff remain furloughed as they wait for other sites to reopen, the firm is finding that they are working with more smaller builders than usual, as they have formed a partnership through the tricky months of lockdown and are now choosing to stay with SJ Scaffolding. Being based in Nottinghamshire means work is often prolific, thanks to the good connections with major cities that are attracting new industries. Projects such as expanding university accommodation means SJ Scaffolding’s services are always in demand, even if their larger competitors may snap up the larger projects. Seeking to resolve this, SJ Scaffolding is chasing some major clients that are moving into the area with the help of a business leads company. As a result, SJ Scaffolding has been able to secure a £250,000 2-year housing project with a new client, that marks the first in the firm’s plans to continue chasing and securing long-term projects within their local area. With this strategy in place and under the fresh new management of Danny and Martin, SJ Scaffolding is able to look ahead to another few decades of successfully providing elite scaffolding services across Lincoln and beyond.
