4 | Q4 2021 To implement a successful strategy, the key is to make sure your plans add value for the customer as well as are supported by flexible processes and are being executed by the right people, according to new research from Nyenrode Business University. According to the research, which studied four global companies, 63% of strategies fail, 24% of management is poorly informed and 95% of employees don’t know or understand the strategy. According to Jeannette Droog lead researcher, there are key reasons for this: “We found that organizations try various tools, methods or techniques to make their strategy a success: a new IT system, new policy, adjustments to the business model, etc. Often these actions are adjustments in different areas that are implemented simultaneously. The result of this is that the focus is lost and a plate of spaghetti arises in which it is still questionable whether the actions lead to the correct implementation of the plans made. The various actions are not wrong in themselves, but they are not well coordinated, so it is important to work together and not think in silos.” In order to combat this the research formulates three variables. Firstly, the business model where you determine the added value for the customer. Secondly, you need to look at the process model and the way in which you add value and, finally, the organisation model whereby you need to assess whether you are deploying the right people for the implementation. These three variable form parts of the so-called “design strategy” phase of the strategy process and, when properly aligned, can improve the implementation of a strategy. The research proves that as an organisation, if you are aware of these three variables and how they are connected, you can close the gap between strategy formulation and implementation. This allows you to make priorities and make your goals crystal clear. This can form the roadmap to the execution of your strategy. How to make your business strategy succeed

5 | Q4 2021 Business failures can be predicted from online ratings Whether or not a business is doomed to fail can now be predicted by a new model from academics at the University of Cologne, LMU Munich, and ETH Zurich. The model, presented by Professor Markus Weinmann and his co-authors Christof Naumzik and Professor Stefan Feuerriegel, uses restaurants’ online ratings to detect business failures with an accuracy of over 78 percent. Using over 64,000 ratings of restaurants, the model estimates their hidden states—‘well-running’, ‘bad ratings but running’, and ‘at risk’—and links it to their likelihood of failure. Restaurants from the ‘well-running’ state display mostly positive experiences, whereas those from the ‘bad ratings but running’ state highlights consisted issues regarding customer satisfaction, yet remain in business due to certain factors such as long opening hours, location, and drive-through service. Examples of this include McDonalds and Burger King. Those restaurants ending up in the ‘at risk’ state have highly dispersed ratings—ranging from very positive to negative—thus reveal that customer satisfaction is subject to considerable variance. These restaurants have a failure probability that is twice as high compared to other states. “Using mere online ratings, we were able to detect 7 out of 10 failures, even several months ahead. This gives restaurant managers enough time to provide countermeasures in time,” says Professor Weinmann. By categorising businesses, the model is able to predict which businesses are likely to fail months in advance, and could prevent such event happening. Those businesses that transition into the ‘at risk’ category, are largely as a result of service performance issues that, if they persist in the long run, are likely to lead to business failure. The researchers say that this model would assist marketers in monitoring customer satisfaction and offer a data-driven tool that provides early warnings of impending business failures. The research was published in the journal Marketing Science.

6 | Q4 2021 Jul21336 8 Greater London Enterprise Awards 2021 Jul21336 Most Dedicated HIV Health & Wellness Organisation 2021 HIV and AIDS is one of the most stigmatised illnesses in the world, with an enormous amount of discrimination and misinformation in the most vulnerable communities. Actionplus Foundation was founded by the Apostle Fred Osei Annin to fight this misinformation and to spread a word guided by faith and by good health practices. We take a closer look at how this incredible Southwark-based charity has achieved such amazing success in the Greater London Enterprise Awards 2021. In 1997, Apostle Fred Osei Annin found a problem, and it was a problem that affected numerous communities the length and breadth of the UK. Those who were living with, or were affected by, HIV/AIDS faced a culture of inaccuracy and it was a culture that had led to Southwark becoming a community with the highest prevalence of HIV/AIDS in the entirety of the UK. For Fred, the solution was obvious – he had to put a stop to it. His solution was Actionplus Foundation, based in the heart of Southwark. He could see the challenges ahead of him. HIV has always been high within black African communities because of ignorance of what treatments are available and what pathways can be found. Guided by the Holy Spirit, Fred started a campaign that was specifically designed to overcome the incredible stigma that had built up over the years and become a major barrier to health professionals intervening when they could have the most impact. Fred’s campaign engaged with black African churches, interacting with pastors so that the growing number of cases within the BAME community could be significantly impacted. This approach came from Fred’s unique knowledge, as he knew not only that the church plays a central role for many African communities, but that their leadership is often ill-informed and unable to provide the appropriate level of assistance. For many in the BAME community, the church is the hub around which many people gather. It is an essential community pillar both in the UK and abroad. This is what makes it the rightful place from which to spearhead such an important campaign of new information. Because many pastors haven’t the right factual knowledge, it has become more of a challenge to combat. In closeknit communities, the risks are greater than they might otherwise be. Those who become infected with HIV might not be aware of their status, or the fact that they are placing the whole community at risk. Those who might live in fear that they will become stigmatised when their HIV status is revealed. These Pastors initially thought they were defending the truth because there thought when God curses someone, no man could redeem that person and so Changing their misconception and ignorance were big issues to be addressed. Many members who were infected with the virus were excommunicated and stigmatised but with this breakthrough, now people are openly getting tested in the church and those who find themselves being positive are getting the treatment they need. The church which was once seen as a “No Go Zone for HIV has now become an HIV friendly environment where millions of lives around the world are been saved by being tested and treated for HIV. Fred is the first Pentecostal Pastor to lead this campaign, single handedly around the world. Many health care professionals have adopted this model because it is quick, effective and safe. Actionplus Foundation gets to the heart of the issue, firstly training pastors so they can be empowered to give medically accurate knowledge to their communities and secondly allowing them to use this knowledge in their preaching to demonstrate clearly God’s love for the world. Many pastors believed that HIV could only be cured through powerful prayer as opposed to the tools which his people have developed over the years. The major breakthrough in this regard came thanks to the Actionplus’ “Take Action Now” model, which saw many different groups change their approach towards HIV/AIDS and thereby revolutionise people’s knowledge of the illness. The “Take Action Now” programme entails giving African faith leaders the training and information they need about HIV/AIDS and sexually transmitted diseases. Since first being run, it has been an essential resource offered by the team, correcting the many different perceptions around the topic. For so many in these communities, the stigmas and mistaken ideas around sexually transmitted diseases have been a source of incredible harm. The power which church leaders hold is sometimes underestimated by those who wield it. This programme, a core part of Actionplus Foundation, empowers leaders with accurate information and allows them to share it with those who depend upon them for guidance. Since first opening the doors of Actionplus Foundation, Fred and his incredible team have been able to change the way in which many in the UK see HIV/AIDS, particularly in BAME communities. The team has been fortunately to have to opportunity to continue its program out outreach, with branches in three African countries, namely Fred’s homeland of Ghana, as well as Kenya and Uganda. The team’s ability to connect with religious groups and educate them on the realities of HIV/AIDS have made them welcome partners to many international organisations that are developing unique initiatives.

8 | Q4 2021 10 | Greater London Enterprise Awards 2021 While originally based in London, the international application of the team’s hard work has achieved some truly stunning results. In just five years, the impact of the Actionplus Foundation’s innovative approach could be seen through the reduction of the country’s rate of HIV infection. This dropped dramatically from 3.6% to 1.3%. As a result of such an incredible achievement, Fred was made one of the recipients of the African Prestigious Awards in Accra, Ghana, in 2015. This placed him amongst such notable luminary figures as the Presidents of Ghana and Tanzania. As the project became more successful, it opened the door for Actionplus Foundation to explore new avenues through which it could reach more people. The aim of the organisation has always been to destigmatise HIV/AIDS, and support those who suffer from the consequences of it, but over the last twenty years, the methods used have needed to develop. The partnerships that the Actionplus Foundation has established have been a major benefit to the organisation as a whole. In the UK, for example, the charity is firmly connected with the Mountain Movers Chapel International Church and the Living Flames Baptist Church to name but two. These locations provide vital support for the overall aims of Actionplus Foundation, offering a space for HIV testing centres around the UK and in African countries. That the stigma has been overcome to the point of welcoming potentially HIV-positive people into the sanctuary of a church is a credit to the astonishing work done by the team over the last few years. While the Actionplus Foundation team do such good work, they do so without a great deal of public funding. Much of their ability to maintain the services they offer, and to grow into other parts of the world, comes from the team’s ability to connect with local people who will support their ambitions. Since first opening its doors, the charity has only ever been funded twice by the Big Lottery Fund, despite applying every year. The challenges presented by a lack of money have clearly not stalled the team, however. Their impressive vision has ensured that they continue to reach into new and exciting areas to support the most vulnerable in our society. The team’s outreach reflects the evangelistic style of the church, reaching out into new communities and taking advantage of any opportunity to spread the news not only of God’s love, but of what this love means for those who are often stigmatised and ignored by society. Since founding Actionplus Foundation, Fred has become one of the country’s leading advocates of HIV prevention, and is regularly invited to appear on both radio and television, as well as to speak at conferences and events. His incredible wealth of experience, combined with his long history of education and outreach, makes him an amazing ambassador who can reach into new areas that have often been ignored. During the last year and a half, the charity has had to pivot its efforts to support people in these unprecedented times. The COVID-19 pandemic has put enormous strain on people and communities at every level of society, and Actionplus Foundation has become an essential rallying point for those who want to make a real difference in the world. Those who test positive for the coronavirus while also being HIV/AIDS victims are at more risk than others and so this sense of community is vital to making them feel welcomed and looked after during difficult times. The team has pulled together to adapt, and the results speak for themselves. For many people, the church is a place synonymous with stigma and shame. It is where our sins are laid down and exposed for all to see. Fred has transformed many churches, changing this message to one which embraces God’s love for His creation. It has been a long, hard road and the journey is not over yet. When Fred first started Actionplus Foundation, he founded it with the intention of helping the people of Southwark, one of the communities with the highest prevalence of HIV in the UK. It still holds that unfortunate title, but the situation is much improved. This is due, in no small part, to the incredible work ethic and inspiration of Fred Osei Annin. He stands at the heart of Actionplus Foundation. His vision of spreading the word about HIV/AIDS prevention, through the prism of God’s love, is one which has transformed communities not just in London, but around the world. It’s why nearly 25 years after being founded, Actionplus Foundation was named the Most Dedicated HIV Health & Wellness Organisation 2021 in the Greater London Enterprise Awards. 20 | Q4 2021 Oct21599 The Future of Engineering Initially, Cadonix set out to solve the issues of automotive firms and their electrical design drawings; however, over the years, it has expanded its offerings to cover the full end to end lifecycle of the electrical harness. From architecture, topology, schematic, simulation, harness design, formboard, manufacture, automated testing, costing and API integration into other systems – Cadonix provides it all. Cadonix, formed in 2012, was established to address the limitations of the computer-aided design tools of the automotive industry for vehicle electrical systems. Customers felt that they did not have enough options in the market and were constrained by the legacy tools. Therefore, Cadonix was set to correct this by introducing a new tool suite into the market called ARCADIA, built not only on the emerging cloud technology but also designed to run entirely in a web browser. Cadonix pioneered the research and development to enable this now patented technology to be the first enterprise CAD suite in the cloud and web browsers. Core to the business is the understanding that the tools they provide should never limit their customers by dictating their workflow; they should design and maintain their products in the best way for their business. In addition, by using collaborative technologies, Cadonix enables all customers to work together seamlessly with its tools (be their clients, vendors, or suppliers). Cadonix believes that the primary aim of the company is to make the lives of its customers simpler, and to allow them to capture and share their designs in the most efficient manner possible. The company achieves this through maximum flexibility in its toolset that only its cloud technologies allow. Chief Technology Officer Andrew Armstrong explains, “We provide an easy transition route from existing products into our Suite for customers who are already using CAD tools and offer comprehensive parts libraries and educational support for those customers new to CAD tools.” The company’s core values have remained largely the same since inception; however, the scope of its product has changed markedly. Although, initially, Cadonix set out to service a relatively small aspect of the industry, now, almost a decade later, it is offering an enterpriselevel suite that puts the company in the top three companies in the market. Andrew explains, “We serve all manner of engineering and design businesses; however, the cutting-edge technology companies like our products, especially the electric vehicle and new technology companies. Because of how our tool is accessed, we are proud that we serve small oneperson companies and huge enterprise customers. It is unusual in our industry for small companies to have access to the same tools as their larger rivals.” Andrew continues, “Also, it is still all too common to hear customers complain that they did not get adequately supported from the suppliers of their existing solutions. For us, this is an unacceptable practice in any industry, and we have been phenomenally successful in offering our industryleading global support to our customers.” Over the last few years, Cadonix has seen a marked rise in the industry to require advanced toolsets to support the topological complexity and development of the new EV (electric vehicle) and autonomous driving platforms that have started gaining momentum. The company has gained a large proportion of its customers from this segment because they are often new companies and do not burden legacy software and processes. They expect that their design tools match their collaborative, cloud-based technologies, involve little to no capital investment and, crucially, are internet-connected. Cadonix is very much at the forefront of revolution in the wire-harness industry globally and in the UK. Andrew explains, “we are working hard trying to change the industry by solving the day in and day out issues of our end users. We are proud of being able to support our customers and extremely pleased for the part we are playing in the British manufacturing industry.” It has been a long road for the company, but as is much of the world, its customers are coming to appreciate how cloud and web-based solutions are the correct way to implement business systems.
