151 | UK Enterprise Awards 2022 Amusement Device Inspection Procedures Scheme (ADIPS) is the fairground and amusement park industry’s own adopted standard for inspection and certification of fairground rides and devices. The organisation’s role is to ensure that each and every fairground and amusement park ride or device is certified as safe for use. We find out more in the wake of the company being recognised in the UK Enterprise Awards 2022. Fairgrounds and amusement parks are relatively safe when compared with other leisure activities and, in fact, represent some of the safest leisure activities of all. Each year thousands of inspections are carried out by registered independent ride inspection bodies. Their capability to perform competent and independent inspection is assessed and monitored on an ongoing basis under the ADIPS scheme. “This is similar in a way to a car getting an annual MOT but in some cases a lot more complex, as you can expect!” explains General Manager, Carl Hagemann. “Your safety is our standard – that is our core value for the public.” The organisation is a not-for-profit company, run on behalf of the industry collective, this being the Amusement Device Safety Council (ADSC) which represents most aspects of the amusement device sector. The ADIPS Scheme is the only Health and Safety Executive (HSE) endorsed scheme which gives great assurance that the systems are supported by statutory bodies. ADIPS also holds BSI 9001 to ensure quality throughout in its daily standard. “Statistically you are at more risk travelling to a fairground than actually using the rides on it,” Carl elaborates. “The public are now more discerning about informed choice with lots of things and the amusement sector is not excluded from this. Ratings, reviews, quality kitemarks, certification, and the customer experiences are all measures that will stay with us well into the future. The ADIPS brand gives this message of safety to the customer at various points in purchase decision.” ADIPS is primarily a UK inspection scheme, however due to the quality of the ADIPS brand it has inspectors undertaking assessments internationally in far flung places such a Malaysia, United Arab Emirates, and Saudi Arabia. Being developed and delivered in the UK however gives the scheme a head start in being in a country with the best health and safety laws and guidance such as the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974. Whilst the Covid-19 pandemic hit the amusement industry hard, as it did with many other business sectors, the Showmen and Apr22685 UK Leading Champions of Leisure Industry Safety Women are ever resourceful and resilient. As soon as the lockdown was lessened they were the first to implement dynamic and creative safe systems to allow early opening, thus giving families one of the the first opportunities to meet again outdoors. Recently, the ADIPS organisation was rewarded for its hard work and determination throughout the pandemic by being bestowed with the notable title of UK Leading Champions of Leisure Industry Safety. Regarding the future, ADIPS will strive to become more publicly known in order to allow the brand to stand out and to mean something to a visitor booking a day ticket, crossing the gates of a fair, or choosing a ride to enjoy. “Ultimately the nature of our business is supporting the safety of funfairs and amusement parks,” Carl continues. “Good safety should be a given that will allow anxiety free participation in outdoor activities and experiences that get the heart pacing, create laughter, joy and chat that hopefully rekindle all of those relationships of friends and family meeting not virtually, but in person again in the healthy outdoors!” Now, with a new management team at ADIPS, 2022 will see a refreshed view on how the scheme is to be delivered. The team comes from leisure with a dynamic approach to customer service and its aim is to offer customer service that meets and exceeds the clients expectations.
