Q2 2021

46 | Q2 2021 Mar21059 Building Back Better Construction is an enormously complex task, combining practical consideration with artistic elegance. It takes a special team to bring together all aspects into a cohesive whole. No one achieves this like the crew from TCi (GB) Ltd. In SME News’ Business Elite Awards, the firm won the title of Recognised Leaders in Commercial Construction Solutions, 2021 – Devon. We thought it time to explore how this intrepid team achieved such an accolade. Some aspects of construction are highly specialised, with the need to provide services that go above and beyond the normal call of duty. The team behind TCi are some of the most experienced in the UK, with a history of working on projects that revolve around the construction and refurbishment of clean room and GMP environments for clients throughout the South and South West UK. The result is a firm that is in high demand, with a reputation that positions the team as valued strategic partners and collaborative contractors. They are able to act as a turnkey solution, seamlessly fitting into even the most complex of projects. Within a competitive market, it’s essential that the team establish good and strong relationships with existing and new clients. To do this, the firm has committed to consistently exceeding expectations, in terms of safety, quality, ethical and environmental standards. This commitment to excellence has put the TCi team in good stead, as many of the projects it is involved in require construction within highly regulated industries and environments. TCi maintains key industry accreditations, recognising standards in safety, quality, procurement practices, staff wellbeing and environmental performance. This proven capability, combined with strong industrial experience and an excellent reputation for customer satisfaction, have been crucial to approaching new clients and projects. When they pitch themselves as the solution, there is more than enough evidence that they can deliver truly breath-taking results. The success of the business turns on the hard work of its employees, with a business approach that empowers each and every member of staff to take ownership of their role and function. This has enabled a collaborative approach which gives the team the ability to work across multiple sites, managing the needs of subcontractors and service providers. Over the years, the company has grown from a core of twenty employees to almost fifty staff, each chosen not just for their skills, but the way in which they fit into the ethos of the business. Recognising that the construction sector has a significant skills shortage, TCi has historically taken a ‘grow your own’ approach, recruiting apprentices who quickly develop into much more advanced roles. This passion for developing and training people in new skills is not just open to new starters, but to anyone within the business. In fact, the business has an uncapped training budget, ensuring that each person has the skills they need to progress in their field of work. While the construction industry has faced a number of challenges in the last year and a half, the approach of TCi means that it has been able to act in a way that has been agile and versatile, anticipating problems and helping clients to overcome them as quickly as possible. Building on its success, TCi will move to new, purpose-built premises within an industrial estate which was built by the firm last year. Having outgrown the current headquarters in Bideford, this will mark a new chapter in the company’s growth and has been designed to reflect TCi’s capabilities as a construction and fit-out contractor. For 2021, a newly developed Sustainability Charter is driving the company forward with hybrid vehicles entering its fleet, energy saving practices and enhanced supply chain and waste management. All this has been combined with a commitment to plant trees to offset remaining scope 1 & 2 carbon emissions to become CO2 neutral in 2022. Throughout the history of TCi, the team has been able to work with some of the leading names in the construction industry, offering their unique perspective to the creation of truly amazing building projects. Their success is something to be celebrated, now and looking forward, as the industry continues to evolve, with TCi at the forefront.
