The focus was around raw food and supplements for cats and dogs. Rebecca Pilkington bought the business in March 2020 (one week before the first lockdown!) and she has stayed closely to the founding principle of health and happiness for all pets. Ziggy’s Pet Supplies provides a wide range of natural and healthy food/treats and supplements plus all accessories needed for happy and healthy pets such as leads, toys, collars, beds, and more. It also has a holistic vet as well as a groomer who practice from the shop. Having a holistic vet on the team means that not only does Ziggy’s have integrity with pet owners, but it can also access a wider range of stock than a ‘normal’ pet shop. For example, it can stock high quality supplements from companies who only supply to vet practices. And while the company has noticed an increase in pet shops within the industry, especially those selling raw, it is unique in how it continues to not stock products if they do not meet its high quality control standards. Alongside this, Ziggy’s is very community focused and prides itself on not only being well positioned to offer pet care advice, but also to lend a listening ear when pet owners are facing difficulties or to share amusing stories about their pets. This is why all new staff have to undergo a comprehensive training programme and attend monthly CPD sessions.” There has been a significant increase in pet ownership over the past two years, due to lockdowns and more people wanting the company of a pet while spending more time at home. This means that Rebecca and her team have been able to support many first-time pet owners. They have also observed an increase in illnesses and issues surrounding allergies and over-breeding – which the team has been able to expertly help with.
