20 | Q4 2021 Oct21599 The Future of Engineering Initially, Cadonix set out to solve the issues of automotive firms and their electrical design drawings; however, over the years, it has expanded its offerings to cover the full end to end lifecycle of the electrical harness. From architecture, topology, schematic, simulation, harness design, formboard, manufacture, automated testing, costing and API integration into other systems – Cadonix provides it all. Cadonix, formed in 2012, was established to address the limitations of the computer-aided design tools of the automotive industry for vehicle electrical systems. Customers felt that they did not have enough options in the market and were constrained by the legacy tools. Therefore, Cadonix was set to correct this by introducing a new tool suite into the market called ARCADIA, built not only on the emerging cloud technology but also designed to run entirely in a web browser. Cadonix pioneered the research and development to enable this now patented technology to be the first enterprise CAD suite in the cloud and web browsers. Core to the business is the understanding that the tools they provide should never limit their customers by dictating their workflow; they should design and maintain their products in the best way for their business. In addition, by using collaborative technologies, Cadonix enables all customers to work together seamlessly with its tools (be their clients, vendors, or suppliers). Cadonix believes that the primary aim of the company is to make the lives of its customers simpler, and to allow them to capture and share their designs in the most efficient manner possible. The company achieves this through maximum flexibility in its toolset that only its cloud technologies allow. Chief Technology Officer Andrew Armstrong explains, “We provide an easy transition route from existing products into our Suite for customers who are already using CAD tools and offer comprehensive parts libraries and educational support for those customers new to CAD tools.” The company’s core values have remained largely the same since inception; however, the scope of its product has changed markedly. Although, initially, Cadonix set out to service a relatively small aspect of the industry, now, almost a decade later, it is offering an enterpriselevel suite that puts the company in the top three companies in the market. Andrew explains, “We serve all manner of engineering and design businesses; however, the cutting-edge technology companies like our products, especially the electric vehicle and new technology companies. Because of how our tool is accessed, we are proud that we serve small oneperson companies and huge enterprise customers. It is unusual in our industry for small companies to have access to the same tools as their larger rivals.” Andrew continues, “Also, it is still all too common to hear customers complain that they did not get adequately supported from the suppliers of their existing solutions. For us, this is an unacceptable practice in any industry, and we have been phenomenally successful in offering our industryleading global support to our customers.” Over the last few years, Cadonix has seen a marked rise in the industry to require advanced toolsets to support the topological complexity and development of the new EV (electric vehicle) and autonomous driving platforms that have started gaining momentum. The company has gained a large proportion of its customers from this segment because they are often new companies and do not burden legacy software and processes. They expect that their design tools match their collaborative, cloud-based technologies, involve little to no capital investment and, crucially, are internet-connected. Cadonix is very much at the forefront of revolution in the wire-harness industry globally and in the UK. Andrew explains, “we are working hard trying to change the industry by solving the day in and day out issues of our end users. We are proud of being able to support our customers and extremely pleased for the part we are playing in the British manufacturing industry.” It has been a long road for the company, but as is much of the world, its customers are coming to appreciate how cloud and web-based solutions are the correct way to implement business systems.
