28 | Q4 2021 Best Ear Wax Removal Clinic 2021 As an Ear, Nose and Throat Nurse Practitioner Jo Outhwaite has recently set up her own clinic in a private practice. We speak to Jo about what she can offer and how her services differ from others in the area. Based in Solihull, Jo Outhwaite is an independent Ear, Nose and Throat nurse practitioner and has been in nursing for 38 years. She took early retirement from the National Health Service in August 2020, where she had been based at Birmingham Children’s Hospital for 26 years. As part of her role at BCH, Jo provided ear microsuction clinics – a skill that she learned 16 years ago. “I have a great deal of experience with children of all ages, from babies to 18-yearolds,” explains Jo. “In my role at Birmingham Children’s Hospital, I worked alongside many other departments and had large cohorts of patients from other specialists in audiology, oncology and dermatology.” In September 2020, Jo established the Ear Microsuction Clinic at Daleswood Health. This is a private independent clinic, set on the ground floor of a modern building so it is easily accessible to all patients. Here, Jo offers her microsuction expertise for ear wax removal. Being both adult and paediatric qualified, Jo is able to offer the service to all age groups. As an independent nurse prescriber, Jo is able to assess, examine, and treat patients, offering them a holistic approach to care. Whilst Jo works independently, with no other staff in the company, she does have access to a GP most of the time as Daleswood Health is a private General Practice. She also has direct access to Ear, Nose and Throat Consultant Surgeons should she need any further advice, as well as access to audiology colleagues who can offer private hearing tests. Jo advertises her clinic on her website, as well as on Google, Facebook and on Yell. “This allows for patient choice,” she elaborates, speaking about her marketing activities. “I have also undertaken some mailshots to GP practices and local pharmacies.” She has some very good reviews on these forums and lots of her business also comes from word of mouth and referrals. The Covid-19 pandemic did not really affect Jo’s business too much and she makes sure that she is following Government regulations at all times. “I wear full disposable PPE and ask my patients to wear a mask as when I am performing microsuction as I am in close proximity to the patient. Any instruments I use during the examination and microsuction are disposable which minimises the risk of cross contamination.” Recently, Jo was rewarded for her hard work with the title of Best Ear Wax Removal Clinic 2021 in the SME News Midlands’ Enterprise Awards – an accolade which is testament to her dedication and commitment to her patients throughout what has been a very trying 14months. “There are many reasons why this clinic is different to others locally,” she finishes. “First, I am a qualified nurse with years of experience working in ENT. I am able to see patients of all ages. I am an independent nurse prescriber so am able to treat the patient holistically. And, finally, I am not affiliated to any company, so I am not under pressure to sell consumables to the patient.” Contact: Jo Outhwaite Company: Ear Microsuction Clinic Web Address: www.ear-microsuction.co.uk Oct21407
