64 | Southern Enterprise Awards 2022 Aug22279 Best Non-Surgical Skincare & Beauty Salon – Surrey Karen Shirlaw bought Beautique Medispa back in 2015 and has made huge changes since then, both in terms of the business’s approach and the treatments offered. “I bought the company when the salons offered more basic beauty treatments and laser hair removal with painful, now redundant, technology,” Karen explains. “Most of the revenue back then came from waxing however, over the next few years, our specialism became skin health. There’s a lot to learn about active ingredients and bioavailability in cosmeceutical skincare products but the team embraced the change and we’ve never looked back!” The clinic’s location, being so close to London, has ensured a steady flow of clients that wouldn’t normally have been seen – on top of the local regulars. For example, young professionals with the more clinical approach to skin care, hair management, and body sculpting flock to the clinic. And, as most end up becoming regulars, this means Karen forges and relies on long-term relationships with most of her clientele. “We, the entire team, feel part of the community and that’s a real honour,” she enthuses. “Some clients come to us purely for our expertise, but with others it’s also a social visit; being a therapist is about so much more than treating a client, it’s about knowing when to talk, when to listen, and never repeating the conversation you’ve had. That sense of trust is something I’m proud of, we’re inclusive and supportive and known for being a trans-affirmative organisation.” Training is very much a priority at Beautique Medispa and Karen will invest in as much training as the therapists are willing to take. Initially, they are recruited at Level 3 for insurance purposes, but level 4 is very much encouraged. Alongside skincare, Karen and the team at Beautique Medispa invested in the latest hair removal technology which is faster and less painful for the client and the clinic had just taken delivery of the very latest equipment when the Covid-19 pandemic hit and the country went into a series of lockdowns. When it re-opened, the team realised they had lost a lot of their basic beauty clients to mobile therapists, or to home treatment methods. “That’s when I realised the real value of offering treatments that you can’t have at home,” Karen states. “Thankfully, we’d started on that path three years before, making it easy for us to come back stronger than ever.” But it is the company’s humility as a quiet, dependable clinic, striving for excellence in all that it does which really sets it aside from competitors in such a fierce industry. “We don’t endorse fads, we’re not ‘insta’ ready with selfie stations, or flooding social media, we’re perhaps a bit too grown-up but I think that’s a wonderful uniqueness,” she elaborates. “We believe we have created the perfect ambience for everyone to feel comfortable.” It is this attention to detail and high levels of customer service which has seen Beautique Medispa gain recognition in the Southern Enterprise Awards, winning the prestigious title of Best Non-Surgical Skincare & Beauty Salon – Surrey. And, for Karen, it appears that the future holds much of the same pioneering treatments with a customer-centric approach. Being a big believer in clinical studies, Karen likes to study the science behind each treatments’ claims before offering them. She says, “I’ll never sell a client something I won’t use myself or don’t believe in.” She tells us a little about a new treatment she is exploring. “We’re long-time fans of micro-needling and recently we’ve seen the most amazing mesotherapy and skin boosting,” she enthuses. “There’s a greater understanding of depths of tissue to work at and the resultant benefits of micro-injuries and the deeper work of mesotherapy for example.
