With a forward-thinking management team in place, the company is moving with the times to ensure its products and services meet its customers’ changing needs. We chat with Managing Director, Andy Murphy to find out more. Based in Bradford, Melrose Interiors is a specialist manufacturer, importer, and distributor of rugs and flooring products. As the largest independent supplier to the UK’s online channels, Melrose Interiors also counts blue chip retailers among its clients. The company has extended its reach via a third-party logistics (3PL) arm, Ping Logistics, and also offers upcycling and recycling services under the Relay brand. Andy tells us, “Our people are the key to Melrose’s success. It’s their creative ideas, expertise, and knowledge that is really the back bone of our business, For us, team development and retention are pivotal to maintaining a great culture.” Melrose Interiors invests in future employment schemes with local schools and offers apprenticeships for school leavers. The company focuses on building open, honest relationships with all its partners. Andy says, “We’re determined to deliver high quality, dependable service whilst maintaining an ethical approach and a sustainable outlook. Our values are stay creative, be the best, win together, we care and think customer.” With a high focus on sustainability in the flooring industry, the company is committed to reducing its carbon footprint and using more natural fibres to make its products. The UK produces around 500,000 tonnes of carpet waste each year. Over 50% of that was ending up in landfill. Understanding that drastic action was needed, Melrose Interiors set up its own recycling brand, Relay. Today, the company is the largest purchaser of post-industrial carpet waste in the country. Melrose Interiors converts surplus carpet into high-quality handcrafted rugs, doormats, and runners, all with outstanding eco-credentials. Over the 10+ years that the brand has been operating, more than 20,000 tonnes of potential carpet waste has been diverted from landfill to the factory. This approx. equates to a 1000 truckloads of carpet. Andy tells us about changes the business has seen recently. He says, “Now that we are no longer in the EU, we have access to many more overseas markets. It’s given us more freedom to import goods from all over the world. Although the current trading climate is challenging, we continue to drive the business forward.” In response to the increased focus on re-use and recycling, Melrose Interiors is increasing its in-house rug and sample production by 50%. Adding a new sampling department will provide added production capacity and ensure the company is able to continue to meet, and exceed, its customers’ expectations.
