Greater London Enterprise Awards 2023

70 | SME News Greater London Enterprise Awards 2023 Most Nurturing Co-Educational 4-11 Independent School 2023 - Central London Nurturing may an odd angle on which to award an institution, but there can be little doubt that The Lyceum is a worthy recipient. It has thrived since its establishment in 1997 through a confidence in delivering unique, coeducational programmes that have long cultivated a near peerless reputation in this space. We spoke with Marketing Manager, Anthony Wheeler for more insight into how The Lyceum has become a de facto leader in outstanding teaching – being a school that does far more than nurture its pupils. Based in the centre of London, there’s certainly no shortage of options for those wanting their children to experience an exceptional education. The Lyceum certainly fulfils that criteria. But more than that, The Lyceum was founded on a rather simple principal – to ensure that the children that attend the school are happy. A child’s happiness during their developing years can drive a life-long love for learning. It is that idea that this school thrives on, and it’s informed every point of consideration, as Anthony explains further. “What we have always retained is that children's happiness is at the core of what we do. We want the pupils in our care to be kind, confident, creative, and a part of their community, and these values run deep through the school. In fact they're even painted on four pillars in our school hall physically supporting the structure! Our ethos centres around these ideals: ‘Our children develop a deep love of learning. Our school is full of laughter and happiness. Every child is valued, listened to, and celebrated. Our children are kind, confident, and creative.’” These values are a mantra that all of the staff live and breathe, with a focus on nurturing students to their best selves, and fully realised people. The school’s curriculum is nothing if not holistic, covering all of the fundamentals in innovative and engaging ways, plus a plethora of alternative options available too. Beyond everything else, The Lyceum seeks to develop a robust community, both locally and nationally, but also internationally. It has built a culture of creativity, confidence, and kindness that can be seen so clearly through its current and past pupils who hold their time at The Lyceum dearly. There’s something magnetic about the school, with a mission that has shaped lives and minds for decades now. Of course, you can only speak so much on these values before you must turn your attention to their source – the staff of The Lyceum. “The pillars of kindness, confidence, creativity, and community really are fundamental to how we operate. They are as important for our staff as they are for children – We are their role models and need to truly embody and project the behaviour we want to see in our pupils. The community aspect is particularly important. We want people to feel part of our internal community (our school community), part of our local, national, and international communities too. Our staff truly work together as one,” Anthony takes a moment to add. Ultimately, as the school moves to the closing months of 2023, the focus remains on ensuring that its peerless standards remain vibrant and potent. In addition, as Anthony explains in his concluding comments, The Lyceum is looking ahead at the launch of its STEAM Studio, which aims to further enhance its science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics departments.
