UK Enterprise Awards 2023

170 | UK Enterprise Awards 2023 Apr23212 Best Sensory Specialists 2023 - Leicestershire From its initial inception, eight years ago, to the successful operation it is today, Messy Senses has gone from strength-to-strength. And it’s no surprise when it has such a dedicated and passionate woman at the helm! We find out more as we speak to Louise Coleman in the wake of the company being recognised in the UK Enterprise Awards 2023. Based in Leicestershire, Messy Senses is a family run business that is passionate about learning through play and giving preference to the process of exploration rather than focusing on an end product. Sensory exploration helps to stimulate all aspects of brain development. It is about allowing an individual to take what they want from the activity rather than being solely parent/carer led, keeping it personal to each individual, regardless of their age and ability. Messy Senses’ aspiration is to open up pathways to new experiences through senses exploration within safe and secure environments and, as the name suggests, the idea behind the company is that children (and adults) can have a place where they can get messy! Explore, feel, and experience things that they wouldn’t normally be able to do in the confines of their own homes. The brainchild of Louise Coleman, Messy Senses came to fruition following the birth of her two children and the desire to want to spend more time with them as a full-time Mummy. Louise’s 20-year background working within the child development and social care industry meant that she was more than experienced enough to take on such a task and start her own business. With an NVQ Level 3 in childcare and education, as well as a Level Management qualification in Health and Social Care, plus a foundation degree and being fluent in Makaton sign language, also meant she had more than her fair share of qualifications too. “I’m passionate about inclusion,” enthuses Louise. “What an amazing journey it has been so far! We are approaching our fourth year and have developed so much. Not only do we see more than 100 families a week within our sessions, we also provide staff training packages, bespoke consultancy work within settings, headline sponsor local charities, run events and bespoke parties.” Specialising in SEN for children and adults, in particular those with autism and complex health care needs, inclusion is Louise’s ethos through and through, and Messy Senses has recently extended its offering to also include the elderly through its intergenerational work which provides sessions based on the sensory needs of adults as well as children. “We offer sessions for everyone, from birth right through to the elderly,” Louise elaborates. “Our aspirations are to open new experiences through sensory exploration within a safe and secure environment. All our services follow the Messy-Senses ethos of promoting diversity and inclusion, ensuring equal opportunities for all.” Louise also prides herself on having a highly trained and dedicated staff base to meet all individual sensory needs in a bespoke way. It is due to the hard work and dedication of Louise and her fantastic team that saw the company gain recognition recently in the UK Enterprise Awards and come away with the much-coveted and prestigious title of Best Sensory Specialists 2023 – Leicestershire. Now, as the future beckons, Louise is determined to continue delivering messy, fun, and safe sessions for all – allowing people to experience and develop in a secure environment!
