SME News | Scottish Enterprise Awards 2023 | 36 Horizons Residential Care Limited is a specialised provider of residential care for children and young people between the ages of 8-18 years old. It promotes a heartfelt aim to provide a stable home environment that’s fully supportive of its all-inclusive ethos. This encompasses respect, diversity, and care, and is designed to enable residents to achieve the fulfilling lives they truly deserve. Raising youngsters in an environment that encourages positive growth is essential when it comes to helping them to flourish and achieve their full potential. They need to feel secure and supported in order to experience joy and express themselves without judgement. Horizons Residential Care is committed to providing a safe and nurturing environment for all its children and young people. In so doing, it has won the hearts and minds of so many residents, as well as garnering much in the way of external recognition and accolades. The facility is divided into seven houses, each accommodating a maximum of three individuals. This close-knit community feel allows for meaningful interactions to take place, whilst also providing space to relax and simply be. The positive experiences this fosters for residents are incalculably far-reaching, and help them to achieve essential and meaningful life goals. Horizons Residential Care is committed to maintaining a staffing team ratio of 1:1, to make sure that all the young people in its care are provided with the complex social, behavioural, and emotional needs they deserve. The story of Horizons Residential Care began in 2013 with the establishment of Westhaven House in Edinburgh, the company’s first care home location. It was impressively successful, prompting the company to expand its services further still, which it did in 2015 by opening a second venue in Edinburgh, Hillview House. Shortly after, Braeside House in Fauldhouse, West Lothian, and Glendale House in Gorebridge, Mid Lothian appeared on the scene, in 2016 and 2017 respectively. During 2022, in view of increased demand for its services, Horizons opened three new services: Two new Houses in Edinburgh – Newhaven and Westhaven Lodge and a new House in Fauldhouse – Bonnieview. This makes up the seven houses of the company’s comprehensive support system. Each house provides excellent care standards, for which they have been commended by the Care Inspectorate as good or very good. Horizons Residential Care’s first to be launched service, Westhaven House in Edinburgh, is very popular amongst service users. The lovely villa accommodation is situated within the historic suburb of Corstorphine, and provides 3 recently upgraded ensuite bedrooms, offering comfortable living spaces for residents. It’s also ideally located near to all the major facilities offered by the city of Edinburgh. The residential home provides bespoke therapeutic support that is particularly aimed at users who have been subjected to challenging life experiences such as trauma. It aims to cultivate relationships, and nurture an environment that feels homely and supportive. Hillview offers a 3-bed bungalow sited in Drumbrae, Edinburgh. It also boasts a separate and newly renovated self-contained cottage, designed to accommodate semi-independent residents, whilst still ensuring continuing care is close at hand. The basis of much of the work Horizons focusses on involves providing a nurturing approach to young people, and is designed to create positive, long-lasting relationships. It aims to build resiliency in users, helping them to develop independence and become an integral part of their community. Braeside in West Lothian is another 3-bed house, which like the other Horizons locations provides therapeutic support packages for children and young people. It promotes attachment-forming, with a trauma-informed approach that has proven effective in helping staff and young people to develop strong and trusting relationships. Glendale House in the village of Gorebridge, Midlothian, differs slightly from the other Horizons residences in that the beautiful and substantial stone villa also features extensive walled gardens. The house also contains a large lounge, dining room, games room, and garden play area, in addition to its three generous bedrooms with ensuite facilities. It offers the same therapeutic support packages as the other Horizons accommodations do, focused on helping children and young people who have encountered trauma and other challenging experiences in their lives. The team at Best Residential Children Care Home 2023 “We take pride in our seven houses and the quality of care our young people receive. Each year we are assessed by our regulatory body, the Care Inspectorate.” “We are young person’s advocates and will help them to advocate for their wishes and rights.”
