SME News- Best of British Getaways 2023 | 6 Best Boat & Canoe Hire Attraction - Wales In the picturesque spa town of Llandrindod Wells, Lakeside Boathouse is a gem of the Welsh countryside. Surrounded by woodland walks and luscious green, the boating lake offers visitors the opportunity to discover the town’s beauty from the water with its fleet of canoes, kayaks, and rafts. Owners Lee and Jenni Percy founded the enterprise in 2020 to restore the lake to its former glory and create a vibrant hub for the community. Lakeside Boathouse has overcome all the odds during the pandemic and thrived with the support of valued locals and tourists. Here we talk to Lee and Jenni about their success as they celebrate receiving the award for Best Boat & Canoe Hire Attraction – Wales. If you visit Mid Wales, the green heart of Wales, Llandrindod Wells is renowned as a location of natural beauty as well as Victorian history. With its charming shop fronts, heritage trail, and impressive museums, the town is teeming with stores, cafes, and things to do. Lakeside Boathouse is one of the town’s star attractions, offering a variety of family activities with Dragon and Pelican boats, canoes, kayaks, rafts, and even SUPs (stand up paddling boards) for hire. When Lee and Jenni first opened Lakeside Boathouse, its only offerings were a small gift shop, three Dragon pedalos, and a fishing club on the 13-acre lake. In its first year, the business could only partially open due to Covid-19 restrictions. Despite this, Lakeside Boathouse expanded its activities with the addition of three extra Dragon pedalos, three Canadian canoes, ten open-top kayaks, and ten SUPs. The owners went on to convert the gift shop into an award-winning ice cream parlour, named No. 1 Ice-Cream Parlour in Powys 2021. The boathouse also boasts a selection of oldfashioned confectionary, hot and cold drinks, and local Welsh gifts. Dedicated to their community, Lee and Jenni were part of a small group of people who set up LCE (Llandrindod Community Events), a project that provides low-cost events throughout the year. Its first mission was to restore the town’s raft race which was met with widespread success and support from the Mayor and local businesses. Lee Percy shares, “Year Two was a great year for the business. We trained 60% of our staff to British Canoeing Instructor Level and expanded our fleet by adding a further nine canoes, nine kayaks, and ten SUPs. We were proud to become a British Canoeing Delivery Partner, offering Instructor Courses, SUP, Kayaking, and Canoeing lessons, as well as private hire options. We also trained our staff to MIAS (Mountain Bike Instructors Award Scheme) standards and now have a mountain bike centre with a selection of scooters, electric and normal bikes to hire. LCE provided many events throughout the year including an Easter fun day, a Pirates Festival, and a Spooky Halloween evening.” Since then, Lakeside Boathouse has continued as a British Canoeing Partner, now offering Foundation Safety Rescue Courses and British Canoeing Instructor Courses. The business has also added two new rowing boats as well as two multi-person SUPs. The Paddle Club has attracted numerous new members, young and old, who wish to improve their skills and confidence. LCE has also grown with over 800 people attending its events. Through collaboration with Sports Powys, Lakeside Boathouse provides a ten-week wellness program that provides the opportunity for local people to try all its activities for free. Approaching its fourth year of business, the boathouse has further expanded its offerings with Team Building, Groups, Stag and Hen Parties, Cycle Hire, Bushcraft, Outdoor Cooking, and Fishing Lessons. Lakeside Boathouse nurtures a supportive relationship with its community and is passionate about bringing local people together with low-cost activities and free events. With its stunning location, the business continues to attract visitors from across the UK who are delighted to discover the diverse entertainment and events available. The hardworking team at Lakeside Boathouse is dedicated to providing customers with memorable experiences and great value for money. With boating escapades, cycle hire, and engaging community events, Lakeside Boathouse has something of interest for everyone. In the near future, Lee and Jenni aim to introduce Archery and Axe Throwing as additional activities for wet and windy days when the water is inaccessible. Established during the pandemic, Lee and Jenni’s steely determination has led the business to great success. Powys County Council initially granted the owners a 5-year contract, which has since been extended to a further ten years. Moving forward, Lakeside Boathouse will continue to provide exciting activities for the entire family and grow the business for years to come. Honoured with a title in this year’s Best of British Getaways, the boathouse has proven itself to be one of Mid Wales’s most exciting attractions. We are excited to see what the future holds for Lakeside Boathouse. Contact: Lee and Jenni Percy Company: Lakeside Boathouse Web Address: https://www.lakesideboathouse.wales/

From the outset, the main objective of Go Highlands has been to operate as the premier tour guide for its area of operation, no easy feat due to the North Highland region being the largest geographic area in the UK. George and Alastair are more than up to the task however, with Alastair utilising his experience working in a five-star hotel and the pair being well-versed in running tours, meeting while operating out of Invergordon’s Cromarty Port Cruise Centre. Bolstered by these experiences, the business has gone from strength to strength over its previous three seasons, with 2023 seeing it cater to almost 2000 clients, 80% of which travelled over from North America. Aiding the company in its mission is a strong set of core values, and Alastair talks us through some of the most important, such as, “integrity in both the services that we offer and in how we deal with our clients, flexibility, in offering scheduled tours as well as customised tours and an outstanding level of communication with both our clients and our partners.” As a small business, the two directors also happen to be the two leading tour guides, and as such, when clients or hotels call the company, they talk directly to either George or Alastair. This positions Go Highlands in an incredibly enviable position, one closer to a high-end concierge than a standard tour company that often simply schedule tours to main attractions. The tours run by Go Highlands are able to be fully tailored, and other experiences are on offer throughout, with these ranging from hiking to biking, golf, boat trips, fishing, and even hunting, all carried out within this breathtaking region of Scotland. In recent years, the North Highland region has played host to several significant tourist developments, culminating in its status today as one of Europe’s premier tourist hotspots. One such reason is the North Coast 500, which emerged in 2015 and has been marketed as one of the world’s greatest road trips, something fully corroborated by George and Alastair. Almost concurrently, the popular historical drama series Outlander premiered on television screens across the world, with this show taking place in the 18th century and being based upon true events that occurred in the Highlands. George explains, “our Outlander tours continue to be our best-selling day tours out of Inverness and from the cruise centre at Invergordon.” This location itself is also paramount to the area’s success, with its status as a former Royal Navy base and it is the deepest natural inlet of water in the UK, meaning that there are almost no restrictions on the size of cruise ships from around the world able to dock there. There is approximately 250,000 people expected to grace the region in 2024 alone. Specializing particularly in golf tours, this sector is likewise experiencing tremendous growth. Alastair elaborates, “recently, Cabot Highlands purchased Castle Stuart golf links (just 8 miles east of Inverness) and are currently constructing a second course, with an expansion of the clubhouse and lodge accommodation.” This is in addition to the area also boasting Royal Dornoch, a frequent pilgrimage for American golf fanatics, and the Tain, Brora, and Golspie golf courses, which too serve as sought after golfing destinations. With this fantastic corner of the world to boot, the future for Scotland’s Highlands appears to be very bright, and George and Alastair are currently exploring ways to maximise their tours, developing relationships with several of the best hotels within the region. This is set to be completed alongside the development of the company’s multi-day trips, which serve as an excellent choice for those looking to explore the region with their family and friends. Whatever comes next for Go Highlands Ltd, its beautiful location, commitment to providing clients with the best experiences possible, and leveraging of Scotland’s rich history, culture, and traditions, are sure to keep clients from around the world seeking out its tours time and again. Contact: Alastair Kennedy Company: Go Highlands Ltd Email Address: ak@gohighlands.co.uk Web Address: https://gohighland-tours.com Scotland is one of the most picturesque places in the world, and nowhere is this truer than in the Scottish Highlands, where Go Highlands Ltd happens to operate its exceptional tours. Founded in May 2021, when Covid-19 was still very much impacting the travel industry, Founders George Murray and Alastair Kennedy were thus amply prepared for the tourist influx that took place in 2022. Now into its fourth season, this company offers full-, half-, and multi-day tours across Scotland’s North Highlands region, predominantly catering to the golf tourism sector. George tells us more about these superb offerings and the company’s unwavering commitment to its clients. Most Client-Focused Guided Tour Company - Scotland

SME News- Best of British Getaways 2023 | 10 Best Motorhome Repair Centre - North West England With more than 75 years of combined experience operating within the caravaning industry, Lancashire’s Leisure Medics UK Ltd is an independent, family-owned and operated caravan repair company that effectively utilises its resources to carry out the necessary service or repairs to get a client’s vehicle up and running to the best of its ability. Primarily, those served by the company are touring caravan or motorhome owners in the North that seek warranty-supported services and repairs to their dream vehicles to ensure that many happy times can continue to be enjoyed across the country or even the world. Cristinia Lowther tells us more about the company and its distinction within the sector. Approved by leading manufacturers in the sector, such as Swift, Erwyn Hunter Group, Coachman, and Auto-Trail, as well as being the only approved repair and service centre for Hunter Nature Karavans across the UK, Leisure Medics is a company that uses both its purpose-built workshop and a mobile repair workshop to carry out maintenance and repairs for its customers at a time and place that suits them. Across its plethora of services, first-class work is undertaken at competitive prices on all makes and models of touring caravans, campervans, motorhomes, and trailers, done so by an experienced and knowledgeable team who excel in tinkering with vintage offerings through to brand-new, top-of-the-line flagships. Repairs and maintenance services on offer include damp diagnostics and treatment, internal/external cladding, appliance repairs (including gas), fittings and furnishings, chassis inspection, window/roof assessment and repair, accessory and upgrade fitting, as well as servicing and any other general repairs and refurbishments. Bolstered by Leisure Medics’ status as a member of the National Caravan Council Approved Workshop Scheme, all of the above work can be carried out without impacting a customer’s warranty, a fantastic bonus on top of what is already a frankly unparalleled collection of quality offerings across the motorhome space. Five key values serve to underpin the sustained excellence established by Leisure Medics, and it is the strict adherence to these positive traits that have enabled the team to carve out a niche for themselves and foster such an enviable reputation. The first of these values champions knowledge, something carried out by continuous training and approval from manufacturers in order to deliver the highquality service that customers have come to expect. Second is a commitment to a servicehearted approach, with the team remaining steadfast in solving all challenges that may arise in addition to carrying out an in-depth annual service. Remaining “passionate with a great attitude” is the third such value, and as Cristina explains, “we maintain an optimistic outlook by turning challenges into opportunities. We are motivated, driven, and passionate for success.” Fourth is the strive for excellence, with this ongoing commitment empowering everyone at Leisure Medics to push themselves to be the best that they can be, from service and repair through to customer interactions. Finally, integrity is something that is at the very heart of the business, with Cristina emphasising the importance of, “being honest and having a strong moral principle, being reliable and trustworthy, and taking responsibility and accountability for actions [both] good and bad.” Across England’s Northwest at present, the Eden Project Morecambe is making headlines, with this project set to turn the area into a tourist destination with a keen focus on education, environment, and the local community. Since the area of this development is located just a stone’s throw from the company workshop, Cristina notes, “we are noticing there are a lot more tourists visiting the area in their motorhomes and caravans, parking on the promenade and [visiting] local sites.” This will be incredibly good for business in the long run and serves to reinforce the best thing about British getaways in general, which is local areas being afforded opportunities to grow and local economies provided the means to thrive. 2024 is set to be a big year for Leisure Medics, with the team celebrating their recent move to a bigger workshop that will allow for an increase in not only the number of projects that can be taken on, but also the size and complexity of said projects. Furthermore, the company will soon become a dealer for Ukraine’s LifeStyle Campers, a micro, off-road caravan that is sure to get those in the community talking. Ultimately, getting the community talking is something that Leisure Medics UK Ltd has done already, simply by providing an unrivalled calibre of service. SME News- Best of British Getaways 2023 | 12 Best Rural Farm Cottage Accommodation - Peak District Lower Damgate Farm Holiday Cottages, Wedding Venue & Dovedale Animal Sanctuary is nestled in a community of local people who expertly work together in order to create something truly unique and special for those visiting the Peak District. This community expands to more than just people, it is the animals on the farm that truly contribute to the diverse way of living that has been fostered here. The premier stand out at this location is its series of award-winning holiday cottages and accommodation, but the team also host weddings, events, and workshops, complete with an unparalleled backdrop. Those who stay at Lower Damgate Farm are immediately made to feel welcome, with this small family business opening its doors to those guests who want to experience this fantastic pocket of the Peak District National Park. Comprised of more than 22 acres that guests are free to make the most of, this rural setting has an abundance of space, gardens, and breathtaking landscapes for patrons to enjoy, whether they want to walk and explore rivers such as the Dovedale or Manifold, or visit local attractions, which include an array of local towns and villages, and even such famous locations as Alton Towers and Chatsworth House. Over the centuries, this landscape has played host to key groups throughout British history, with the area initially serving a family during the Roman Empire, who built the culvert that runs down the drive to this day. A few hundred years later, a Viking Longhouse graced the locale, before the Tudors built the house on the land that still stands to this day and that host Carolyn Wilderspin lives in with her family. The environment is stunning, and thanks to its former Viking residents, the space is perfectly situated, having its own eco-climate so that it remains hot when the sun shines and the wind blows over the top of the buildings. As for the stellar accommodation offerings that have won Lower Damgate this award, these span a host of different settings, such as the luxury selfcatering holiday cottages that make up the farm’s courtyard properties. These cottages each possess their own distinct features and personalities, and are named Reuben’s Roost, Bremen’s Barn, and Hope’s Hideaway, respectively, as well as Purdy’s Place, the main 16th-century farmhouse. Each of the abodes gracing this landscape have been adapted to suit the modern guest and can even accommodate large groups, with the entire property as one having 11 bedrooms and sleeping a minimum of 24. Facilities can also be hired on a private basis. Individually, Rueben’s Roost has 3 bedrooms and can sleep 7+, Bremen’s Barn has 4 bedrooms and can sleep 8+, Hope’s Hideaway too has 4 bedrooms, sleeps 9+, and also comes with a large games room. Purdy’s Place found at the end of the farmhouse houses an additional 2 rooms and a small living area, sleeping a total of 5. A final key offering that can sleep 2 adults in the summer months is Rose’s Retreat, an authentically styled gypsy caravan, located just a stone’s throw from the lush outside areas. Other amenities gracing Lower Damgate Farm include a unique “Alpaca Hut”, with this luxury little space also having a hot tub for guest use, a secure play area, BBQ and decking space, and a range of comfortable outdoor furnishings are available that really serve to complete the scene. On a guest’s travels, they may even meet some of the resident animals, and are more than welcome to stop and say hello. Beyond its bespoke accommodation, those staying for either a wedding or an event may find themselves utilising the spaces of the Dovedale barn and Garden Room, with this location boasting the claim of being much more than just a traditional barn, rather, it has been expertly converted to serve as the perfect space for all wedding, event, and workshopping needs. Just one of the many magnificent facilities sported by the farm, the sights on offer there really need to be seen to be believed.
